Queensland Specialist Centre offers bulk-billed rTMS for treatment-refractory depression — delivered by specialist TMS technicians under direct psychiatric supervision.
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive, evidence-based treatment that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate specific regions of the brain involved in mood regulation. It is delivered as an outpatient treatment, requiring no anaesthesia, and patients can drive and return to normal activities immediately after each session.
A standard course consists of daily sessions (Monday to Friday) over four to six weeks, each lasting approximately 20–40 minutes. The treatment targets the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and is associated with significant antidepressant effects in patients who have not responded adequately to medication.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) that has not responded to at least two adequate antidepressant trials. This is the MBS-approved indication for bulk billing.
Depression presenting with prominent anxiety, worry, or somatic symptoms, particularly where anxiolytic medications have been inadequate or poorly tolerated.
Treatment-refractory depression occurring in the context of PTSD or OCD, where standard pharmacotherapy has proven insufficient.
Patients unable to tolerate adequate antidepressant trials due to side effects, medical comorbidities, or drug interactions.
Depressive episodes in Bipolar Disorder where antidepressants carry a risk of mood destabilisation, under appropriate mood-stabilising cover.
Treatment-refractory depression during pregnancy or the postnatal period, where pharmacological options are limited by concerns regarding fetal or infant exposure.
